So, you’ve been asked to facilitate a meeting or group training. What does that mean exactly? Do you ensure that everyone is properly introduced? Do you use a quick ice-breaker exercise? Is your role simply to be by the flip chart and note down suggestions? What preparation is needed? How do you manage the schedule? How do you manage difficult people in the group?

These are fundamental yet important questions that need to be asked and the FACILITATION SKILLS 101 WORKSHOP exposes participants to a wide range of skills and tools (from decision making to team management to communication) that will help them facilitate meetings and discussions with ease.
This 2-day fast paced training program equips participants with not just the knowledge but the practical elements for effective facilitation. The workshop will also help participants design and manage processes that will ensure successful outcomes where it will gain the commitment of all those involved.

The two-day workshop is designed to be highly interactive and aimed at drawing from the experiences of the participants. It builds scenarios that is applicable to their work environment and allows them to ‘interact’ with these scenarios in a positive manner.
At the end of the training, participants will:

  • Appreciate the benefits and applications of facilitation
  • Identify key tasks and practice effective facilitation
  • Use facilitation skills to achieve optimum results
  • Ask relevant questions to guide discussion
  • Understand how to stimulate group participation and positively handle conflict
  • Consider the uses of a range of techniques contained within the ‘Toolkit’.
  • Develop their facilitation skills through ‘live’ practice sessions

  • Those who lead teams and projects meetings
  • Those who work in groups
  • Those who wish to become more effective at guiding people to solve problems and make decisions
  • Those who want to develop their interpersonal skills when working with others

Prior to the training: a facilitated meeting by the participants should be recorded and given to the training team. This recording will be used in the actual training for feedback and evaluation. This sets the premise for discussions during training.

Effective facilitation needs to create an environment conducive for any group process to flourish. Hence the content of the program will be divided into 2 sections (days).
Please refer to Detailed Program.

Maximum number of 25-30 participants per class

Role playing, Demonstrations, Scenario Building, Group Dynamics & Facilitative Processes

  • Procurement of knowledge. Through a series of activities and discussions, participants will be allowed to systematically experience the various spokes as identified in the Facilitator at the Helm model.
  • Participation. Each topic will allow participants to be involved and engaged. The program is aimed at role modeling what facilitation is. Hence every activity is a resource that participants can use in their own facilitation and learning is enhanced through their active participation during these activities.
  • Practice. At the end of the program, participants will be invited to practice what they had learned through short presentations. They will be asked to team facilitate a short discussion/meeting etc. and direct feedback by the participants and training team will be given to maximize the learning experience.

Pre & Post Evaluations:

  • Pre-Evaluation: The video-recording of a meeting/discussion that was facilitated by a (or a few) participants will act as a base-line for discussions (during training) to take place.
  • Post Evaluation: A half day re-cap session (after 3 months) to evaluate the learning outcomes to (1) Reinforce learnings and (2) Address issues that might have developed post training in relation to facilitation.
This half-day recap session is complimentary and given without charge by HELP University.
